39th Independent Spirit

The 39th edition of the Film Independent Spirit Awards, celebrating outstanding independent films and television productions from 2023, is set to be presented by Film Independent on February 25, 2024. The venue for the event is the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California, and the hosting duties will be handled by the talented American actress and comedian, Aidy Bryant. This marks the second consecutive year the ceremony will be broadcast live on both IMDb and Film Independent’s YouTube channels, along with various other social platforms.

The nominations were unveiled during a live YouTube broadcast on December 5, 2023, with Joel Kim Booster and Natalie Morales doing the honors. The films American Fiction, May December, and Past Lives led the pack with five nominations each, closely followed by The Holdovers and Passages, both securing four nominations. In the television categories, I’m a Virgo and The Last of Us emerged as the frontrunners, each receiving four nominations.

In a noteworthy development, Film Independent introduced a fresh category this year: Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series. This addition ensures an equal distribution of performance categories between film and television, featuring three for each — Best Lead Performance, Best Supporting Performance, and Best Breakthrough Performance for film, and Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series, Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series, and the newly instituted Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series for television.
