Episode Summary
Darby Hart, a self-taught investigator, adept hacker, and the author of the compelling true crime narrative, “The Silver Doe,” recounts her endeavors to solve cases involving female murder victims in the United States alongside her former partner, Bill. Their paths diverge for six years until an unexpected invitation to a secluded retreat by billionaire Andy Ronson brings them face to face once again.
The reunion takes a grim turn when, during a late-night visit to Bill’s room, Darby discovers him covered in blood and gasping for life. Frantically seeking assistance, Darby’s attempts to summon help prove futile as Bill urges her to stay with him before losing consciousness. A disconcerting flashback reveals Darby and Bill exploring the former dwelling of a suspected serial killer, stumbling upon the gruesome remains of the initial victim.
The next morning, Darby’s world shatters as Bill is pronounced dead, with suspicions of morphine overdose lingering. Unconvinced, Darby investigates, assisted by Ray, only to find no signs of self-injection or fingerprints on the syringe. Lee, another guest, interrupts the investigation, prompting Darby to hide. Later, she confides in Lee about her suspicions and, with encouragement, decides to hack into the hotel’s security system. The footage reveals David and Ziba’s presence, along with a mysterious masked figure, casting doubt on the circumstances surrounding Bill’s demise.
As Darby delves deeper, a series of flashbacks unveil her early exposure to crime scenes, accompanying her coroner father. A pivotal discovery of silver earrings at a crime scene intertwines her fate with Bill’s, culminating in their initial meeting at a bar after an online connection sparked by shared interests. The narrative unfolds, weaving a complex web of intrigue, suspicion, and a shared history that Darby must unravel to uncover the truth behind Bill’s mysterious death.
