Bodies (Tv Series)
“Bodies” is a captivating British crime and science fiction limited series, expertly crafted for Netflix by the talented Paul Tomalin. The inspiration behind this compelling narrative stems from the DC Vertigo graphic novel of the same name, a collaborative work by Si Spencer and skilled illustrators Dean Ormston, Tula Lotay, Meghan Hetrick, and Phil Winslade. Premiering on Netflix on October 19, 2023, the series unfolds over eight gripping episodes.
The storyline unfolds with the discovery of a lifeless body on London’s Longharvest Lane. Strikingly, this morbid event recurs in four distinct years – 1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053, setting the stage for separate detective investigations across these temporal divides. Each era introduces a different detective grappling with the complexities of a murder in Whitechapel. The dedicated police officer of the 1890s, Alfred Hillinghead; the adventurous 1940s detective, Karl Whiteman; the formidable female detective of the 2020s, Sergeant Shahara Hasan; and Maplewood, a detective from the post-apocalyptic 2050, contribute unique perspectives to solving the enigmatic crime.
As the plot unfolds, Hillinghead and Ashe, the detectives from 1890 and 1941, identify the victim as Sir Julian Harker, a wealthy stockbroker with an intriguing connection to his purportedly clairvoyant mother, Lady Harker. A seance, orchestrated by the Harkers, reveals eerie details but is disrupted before naming the killer. The unsuspecting Hillinghead becomes ensnared in a compromising situation with the deceased Defoe’s body, a ploy orchestrated by the Harkers. Amidst the intrigue, a mutual attraction between Hillinghead and Ashe takes center stage, culminating in a passionate encounter. The narrative escalates as Hillinghead, now aware of Harker’s sinister plans, returns to the crime scene, leaving an indelible mark by carving his name into a brick wall.
“Bodies” weaves together a riveting tale, seamlessly blending crime and science fiction across different timelines, promising viewers an enthralling and multi-layered storytelling experience.
Episode Summary
Hillinghead and Ashe identify the individual in the photograph as Sir Julian Harker, a prosperous stockbroker whose wealth derived from his mother, purported clairvoyant Lady Harker. Sir Julian invites Hillinghead to a seance where Lady Harker claims to communicate with Defoe’s spirit. However, the “connection” is severed before identifying the killer. The Harkers drug Hillinghead, photographing him in a compromising position with Defoe’s corpse. Returning to Ashe’s apartment, he warns of Harker’s impending actions. Succumbing to mutual attraction, Hillinghead and Ashe engage in an intimate encounter. Back at the crime scene, Hillinghead inscribes his name on a brick wall.
Esther, a child, coerces Whiteman in Yiddish for a payoff, threatening to expose his involvement with the body. The organization instructs Whiteman to eliminate her. Unable to go through with it, Whiteman fakes Esther’s death and conceals her in his flat. Elias Mannix is apprehended and discloses to Hasan that his foster parents possess knowledge about future events. They forewarn him of similar bodies appearing before and his responsibility for a destructive explosion Hasan will force him to carry out. Despite informing her superiors, Mannix is detained. Returning to Longharvest Lane, Hasan observes the name “Hillinghead” and the tattoo symbol scratched on the wall.
Maplewood escorts Defoe to a medical facility, witnessing his doppelganger’s demise. Mannix reveals that the identical body is from two days in the future, a result of their organization’s time travel capability. He directs Maplewood to follow Defoe. Ashe discovers a fingerprint Harker left on Hillinghead’s spectacles, linking him to the body through prints Hillinghead found earlier on Longharvest Lane. Whiteman and Esther are pursued by a man attempting to kill him in an air raid shelter. Whiteman, injuring his assailant, discovers he is a fellow police officer. The organization’s caller, Polly, is revealed to be Hillinghead’s daughter, poisoning Esther.vHasan uncovers archive case files, linking Mannix’s foster parents to the Morley family and the Harkers. Breaking into Harker’s abandoned home, she encounters Andrew Morley, who cryptically discusses a group with roles to change the world. Morley locks Hasan in an underground room.
Maplewood shelters Defoe from his impending murder. They discuss free will and his research into naked singularity. Attempting to escape, Maplewood is tasered by her neighbor Lorna, a member of Chapel Perilous.vHillinghead interrogates Harker about Defoe’s body. Harker, blackmailing him with compromising photographs, instructs Hillinghead to frame Ashe. Harker admits not knowing the killer. Whiteman seeks DCI Calloway’s assistance in finding Polly, discovering she is Managing Director of Harker Bank. Whiteman abducts Polly, threatening Russian roulette in his synagogue until she confesses to killing Esther. Calloway intervenes, arresting both for murder. Hayden Harker kills Calloway.
Elias Mannix’s fingerprints match Julian Harker’s, taken by Hillinghead in 1890. Hasan traces Elias’ birthmother, Sarah Mannix, discovering DCI Barber is Harker’s great-grandson and Elias’ father. Barber disappears after taking Elias from HM Prison Feltham. At Barber’s home, Hasan finds a 1941 recording confirming Elias’ plan to bomb London. Lorna and Defoe take Maplewood to Chapel Perilous, where an older Hasan reveals the Throat, Defoe’s active time-travel device. Maplewood betrays Defoe and Hasan. Soldiers raid the premises, killing most of Chapel Perilous. Maplewood leads Mannix to the Throat, carving a message into the wall and ending up at Hillinghead’s station.
In prison, Hillinghead tells Harker he knows he is Elias Mannix and predicts his lonely death. In this altered timeline, Harker becomes distant, and Polly, discovering Defoe’s body, grows bitter toward her husband. Hasan discovers Maplewood’s carving in 2053, leading her to the pub. Using the Throat, she travels to 2023, finding Whiteman’s recording. Visiting Sarah Mannix, she informs her younger self of the bomb’s second trigger. Older Hasan plays Harker’s recording for Elias, who refrains from detonating the bomb. Elias disappears, altering history, preventing the catastrophes experienced by Hillinghead, Whiteman, and Hasan.
