Safe (2012 Film)

“Safe,” a 2012 American action thriller, marks the collaborative efforts of writer and director Boaz Yakin, along with producers Lawrence Bender, Dana Brunetti, and Joseph Zolfo. Starring Jason Statham, Chris Sarandon, Robert John Burke, and James Hong, the film revolves around Luke Wright (played by Statham), a former cop and cage fighter who becomes the protector of a gifted child pursued by the Russian mafia, Chinese Triads, and corrupt NYPD officers. Lionsgate Films released “Safe” on April 27, 2012, and it garnered mixed reviews from critics. Despite the critical reception, the film managed to gross $40.6 million globally, surpassing its $30 million budget. The inception of “Safe” was announced on May 6, 2010, as part of a three-film distribution deal between IM Global and Lionsgate, with the other two films being “Dredd” and “Protection.” The production involved contributions from Lawrence Bender Productions, Trigger Street Productions, Automatik Entertainment, and 87Eleven Action Design.

With a budget of $30 million, principal photography unfolded from October to December 2010 in Philadelphia and New York City. Notable scenes were filmed on Broad Street in Philadelphia during the nights and early mornings of November 17, 18, and 19. Additionally, a scene featuring a class in China was shot using a Catholic School in downtown Philadelphia. Originally slated for release on October 28, 2011, and later on March 2, 2012, in the United States, “Safe” eventually hit theaters on April 27, 2012.

The narrative centers around Mei, a brilliant girl with an uncanny ability for numbers, who is kidnapped by the Chinese Triads. Han Jiao, the Triad boss, brings Mei to New York’s Chinatown for involvement in criminal activities. Simultaneously, Luke Wright, a fighter, faces tragic consequences after defying the Russian Mafia in a match, leading to the death of his opponent and his wife. The story unfolds as Mei becomes a target for the Russian Mafia, corrupt NYPD detectives, and the Triads. When Luke encounters Mei fleeing from the Russians in the subway, he steps in to protect her, discovering that she holds the combination to a safe containing $30 million belonging to the Triads. Utilizing his elite skills, Luke embarks on a mission to safeguard Mei.

Despite initial reservations upon viewing the trailer, the allure of Jason Statham in an action-packed film proved irresistible. “Safe” delivered a good, if not exceptional, cinematic experience. While the beginning was slightly slow, the narrative, presented through alternating perspectives of Luke and Mei, gained momentum. The film showcased Statham’s trademark action sequences, prompting audience reactions ranging from applause to exclamations of excitement. The storyline, while not groundbreaking, effectively engaged viewers, with some predictable moments interspersed throughout. Acting performances were generally average, with notable exceptions for Statham and newcomer Catherine Chan, who impressed in her Hollywood debut. The film featured a mix of cheesy lines, memorable quotes, and unexpected humor, adding a layer of entertainment beyond typical action fare.

In essence, “Safe” adheres to the expected formula of a Jason Statham action film, prioritizing exhilarating action over critical acclaim. It may not be an Oscar contender, but for enthusiasts of intense, action-packed movies, “Safe” proves to be a reliable choice. After all, when it comes to Statham’s films, the appeal lies in the adrenaline-pumping sequences that seldom disappoint. So, if you’re in the mood for a thrilling cinematic experience, “Safe” offers a dependable option.

Summary

Luke Wright, a former cop and cage fighter, experiences a life-altering turn when he unintentionally wins a rigged fight. The repercussions are severe when Emile Docheski, the head of the Russian mafia, orders the execution of Luke’s pregnant wife as punishment. To compound the tragedy, Luke becomes a marked man, with a directive to kill anyone he interacts with regularly. Forced into a life of destitution, Luke abandons his previous existence and becomes a homeless wanderer.

Simultaneously, in China, a young mathematical prodigy named Mei is abducted by the Triad, working for the ruthless Han Jiao. Han aims to exploit Mei’s skills as a mental calculator to erase his criminal enterprise’s digital footprint. Mei is transported to New York City under the supervision of the brutal gangster Quan Chang.

A year later, Han arrives in New York, seeking Mei’s ability to memorize a crucial number. Their journey is disrupted when they are ambushed by the Russian mafia. Mei is taken by Emile, who demands the number, but she steadfastly refuses. Amidst the chaos, corrupt police, under Captain Wolf (who collaborates with Han), intervene. Mei manages to escape, encountering Luke at a subway station. Recognizing Chemyakin, one of the assailants responsible for his wife’s death, Luke intervenes, setting off a chain of events that sees Mei and Luke joining forces against their common enemies.

As the narrative unfolds, Luke’s dark past as a black ops hitman is revealed, intertwined with government favors and political corruption. The story takes a gripping turn as Luke, Mei, and a reluctant alliance with Captain Wolf navigate the treacherous terrain of criminal syndicates and corrupt officials. The plot culminates in a high-stakes showdown, featuring betrayal, redemption, and a strategic dismantling of criminal enterprises.

In the aftermath, Luke and Mei plan to leave the city for a fresh start, cautiously optimistic about a future free from the shadows of their tumultuous past. The story encapsulates themes of revenge, sacrifice, and the pursuit of redemption, all woven into a suspenseful tale of one man’s journey from the depths of despair to the possibility of a new beginning.
