Ferrari (2023 film)
“Ferrari,” a 2023 American biographical sports drama, takes viewers on a captivating journey into the personal and professional challenges faced by Enzo Ferrari, the renowned Italian founder of Ferrari S.p.A., during the summer of 1957. Directed by Michael Mann and written by Troy Kennedy Martin, the film draws inspiration from Brock Yates’ 1991 biography, “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine.” Adam Driver skillfully portrays Enzo Ferrari, supported by a stellar cast including Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gadon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell, and Patrick Dempsey.
The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a crisis in Ferrari’s life. His company, built from scratch with his wife Laura a decade earlier, faces looming bankruptcy. The film delves into the complexities of Ferrari’s tempestuous marriage, marked by mourning for one son and the acknowledgment of another. In a bold move to counter financial losses, Ferrari decides to stake everything on a daring race—the iconic Mille Miglia, a 1,000-mile race across Italy.
Originally intended for a Showtime premiere in the United States, “Ferrari” ultimately made its debut at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2023. Neon later released the film theatrically in the United States on December 25, 2023. Despite initial plans for a streaming release, the film has achieved significant success, grossing $20 million worldwide and earning acclaim from critics. The National Board of Review recognized it as one of the top 10 films of 2023.
While Adam Driver delivers a solid performance, Penélope Cruz emerges as a standout, shouldering the emotional weight of the non-racing aspects of the story. The film’s real stars, however, are the meticulously crafted cars and the breathtaking driving scenes. Even for those not typically drawn to action films, the well-executed sequences in “Ferrari” are captivating. The movie strikes a balance between the thrilling race and Enzo Ferrari’s personal life, ensuring satisfaction for audiences seeking more than just a car-centric narrative. Cruz’s powerhouse performance elevates the film, showcasing her talent once again and leaving a lasting impression on viewers. “Ferrari” stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of compelling storytelling and exceptional cinematic craftsmanship.”
Summary
In the summer of 1957, Enzo Ferrari finds himself at a crossroads, both in his personal life and as the leader of his racing team preparing for the Mille Miglia. The year prior, tragedy struck with the death of his only son, Dino, leaving him and his estranged wife, Laura, in mourning. Complicating matters is the revelation of another son, Piero, born out of an extramarital affair with his mistress Lina Lardi.
Ferrari faces dual challenges in his professional life. His company is in financial turmoil, requiring a merger to stay afloat. However, Laura’s ownership of half the company’s shares becomes a hurdle, demanding her consent for any major decision. To secure the merger, Ferrari must convince Laura to sign over her shares, a task made more complicated by the discovery of his secret son.
As the Mille Miglia approaches, fate takes a grim turn when Ferrari’s new driver, Alfonso de Portago, suffers a fatal accident, claiming lives including his own. Amidst public scrutiny and blame, Laura, suspicious of Ferrari’s actions, demands a substantial check as part of the deal. The race becomes a backdrop to the unraveling drama, with Ferrari ultimately agreeing to Laura’s terms but not without sacrifice.
The film captures the essence of Enzo Ferrari’s tumultuous life during a pivotal year, weaving together personal grief, family dynamics, and the high-stakes world of racing. Penelope Cruz delivers a standout performance as Laura, adding emotional depth to a narrative largely dominated by the intense racing scenes. Despite its focus on the automotive world, the film succeeds in presenting a compelling story beyond the race track, showcasing the complex character of Enzo Ferrari and the challenges he faced during this defining period.
