Sanjay Leela Bhansali, born on 24 February 1963, is a renowned Indian filmmaker and music composer recognized for his exceptional work in Hindi cinema. Over the years, he has garnered numerous accolades, including 7 National Film Awards and 12 Filmfare Awards, out of which five were for Best Director. In addition, he received a BAFTA Award nomination for his outstanding contributions to cinema. In 2015, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, one of the country’s highest civilian awards, in recognition of his remarkable achievements.

Bhansali made his directorial debut with the romantic musical “Khamoshi: The Musical” in 1996, marking the beginning of a distinguished career. He achieved both commercial success and critical acclaim with romantic dramas like “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” (1999) and “Devdas” (2002), the latter earning a BAFTA nomination for Best Film Not in the English Language. His excellence in filmmaking was further recognized when he won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi for directing the drama “Black” in 2005.

Despite facing setbacks with films like “Saawariya” (2007) and “Guzaarish” (2010), Bhansali continued to explore new avenues in cinema. He ventured into music composition with “Guzaarish” and also began producing films under his banner, Bhansali Productions.

Bhansali reclaimed his position in the industry with the tragic romance “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela” (2013), followed by the highly successful period dramas “Bajirao Mastani” (2015) and “Padmaavat” (2018). These films not only achieved commercial success but also received critical acclaim, with Bhansali winning the National Film Award for Best Direction for “Bajirao Mastani” and the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for “Padmaavat”. His recent directorial venture, the biopic “Gangubai Kathiawadi” (2022), has further solidified his position as a master filmmaker, earning him additional National and Filmfare Awards.

Bhansali’s contribution to Indian cinema extends beyond filmmaking. He launched his music label, Bhansali Music, and has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of Bollywood. His films, known for their grandeur and musicality, resonate with audiences worldwide, making him one of the most celebrated filmmakers in Bollywood.

From “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” to “Devdas” and “Padmaavat,” Bhansali has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema, showcasing his love for storytelling and music through each cinematic masterpiece. His dedication to the craft and his ability to evoke emotions through his films have earned him a special place in the hearts of audiences and critics alike.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to Indian cinema, Bhansali was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2015, reaffirming his status as a luminary in the world of filmmaking.

Early and Personal Life

Sanjay Leela Bhansali was born on 24 February 1963 in Bhuleshwar, South Bombay, into a Gujarati Jain family. His mother, Leela, supported the family by sewing clothes. Bhansali is deeply connected to his Gujarati roots, enjoying Gujarati food, music, literature, and architecture.

His sister, Bela Bhansali Sehgal, directed “Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi” (2012), a film for which he wrote the script. Bela’s daughter, Sharmin Segal, made her acting debut in his production “Malaal” (2019), for which he also served as a writer and composer.

Career

Sanjay Leela Bhansali commenced his career as an assistant to Vidhu Vinod Chopra, contributing to renowned films like “Parinda” (1989), “1942: A Love Story” (1994), and “Kareeb” (1998). However, their collaboration ended abruptly when Bhansali declined to direct “Kareeb.” In 1996, he marked his directorial debut with “Khamoshi: The Musical,” a film that, while not commercially successful, garnered critical acclaim for its portrayal of a daughter’s challenges communicating with her deaf-mute parents. Despite its modest commercial performance, the film clinched five Filmfare Awards, including the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Film (Critics).

His subsequent project, the period romantic drama “Devdas” (2002), starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit, emerged as a monumental success, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. “Devdas” received widespread critical acclaim, winning ten awards at Filmfare, including Best Director, and securing multiple accolades at the 50th National Film Awards. It also garnered international recognition, earning a nomination for Best Foreign Film at the British Academy of Film & Television Awards (BAFTA) and being India’s submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002, “Devdas” earned a place among Time magazine’s “The 10 Greatest Movies of the Millennium (Thus Far).”

Following this triumph, Bhansali encountered mixed results with subsequent projects like “Saawariya” (2007) and “Guzaarish” (2010), the latter marking his debut as a music composer. He diversified his portfolio by venturing into opera with “Padmavati” in 2008, receiving high praise from international critics. Despite receiving mixed reviews, “Guzaarish” earned Bhansali a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Director.

In the realm of production, Bhansali saw both successes and setbacks. He produced commercially successful ventures like “Rowdy Rathore” (2012) and “Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi” (2013), alongside projects that faced critical and commercial challenges.

Bhansali’s magnum opus “Bajirao Mastani” (2015), a period romantic drama, brought him significant acclaim and controversy. Despite facing opposition from certain quarters, the film resonated with audiences and critics alike, winning numerous awards, including Best Director at Filmfare and the National Award for Best Director. It emerged as one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time and received international recognition, including being India’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Golden Globe Awards.

Continuing to explore new horizons, Bhansali launched his music label, Bhansali Music, in March 2023, coinciding with the release of the soundtrack for the Netflix series “Heermandi: The Diamond Bazaar.”
