Animal (2023 film)
“Animal,” a 2023 Indian Hindi-language action drama film, is a cinematic venture directed and edited by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Collaborating with Pranay Reddy Vanga and Saurabh Gupta, Sandeep also co-wrote the screenplay for the film. The production is a joint effort by Bhushan Kumar, Pranay Reddy Vanga, Krishan Kumar, and Murad Khetani, representing T-Series Films, Bhadrakali Pictures, and Cine1 Studios. The star-studded cast includes Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, and Tripti Dimri. The narrative revolves around Ranvijay Singh, a formidable young man who discovers a plot to assassinate his father, compelling him to embark on a journey of revenge.
Officially announced in January 2021, the film’s title accompanied the announcement. Principal photography commenced in April 2022 and successfully concluded by April 2023. The music score for “Animal” features compositions by JAM8, Vishal Mishra, Jaani, Manan Bhardwaj, Shreyas Puranik, Ashim Kemson, and Harshwardhan Rameshwar. The cinematography, handled by Amit Roy, and the editing, overseen by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, contribute to the film’s visual appeal. Clocking in at 201 minutes, “Animal” stands as one of the longest Indian films to date.
Originally slated for release on 11 August 2023, the film experienced a delay due to post-production requirements. Subsequently, it graced theaters on 1 December 2023, offering audiences the experience in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada languages, both in standard and IMAX formats. Despite receiving a mixed reception from critics, who lauded aspects such as storytelling, soundtrack, action sequences, and Kapoor’s performance while criticizing graphic violence and writing, “Animal” shattered numerous box office records. It achieved the highest non-holiday opening, biggest single-day earnings, highest opening weekend, and highest opening week in India. Internationally, it became the highest-grossing Indian film in Australia and Canada, accumulating a staggering ₹896.61 crore (US$110 million) worldwide. This marked “Animal” as the third highest-grossing Indian film of 2023, the fifth highest-grossing Hindi film, the ninth highest-grossing Indian film, and the highest-grossing A-rated Indian film. Notably, it became Ranbir Kapoor’s highest-grossing film, surpassing his previous record with “Sanju” (2018).
The film unfolds the saga of Balbir Singh, a wealthy industrialist preoccupied with business, leading to a strained relationship with his son, Ranvijay. Despite the apparent neglect, Ranvijay idolizes his father, seeing him as a superhero. However, circumstances lead to Ranvijay’s exile to a boarding school, creating a rift. The narrative leaps forward, revealing Ranvijay’s return after eight years, prompted by an attempt on Balbir’s life. Accompanied by his wife Gitanjali and children, Ranvijay wages a war against those behind the assassination plot.
While “Animal” receives acclaim for its acting, cinematography, and the raw intensity of its violent scenes, criticism is directed towards the story logic. The central theme questions the feasibility of a son’s unwavering love for a father who seemingly lacks affection and time for him. Some view the film as excessively hero-centric, highlighting instances where events unfold merely to suit the protagonist’s desires, leading to a lack of connection with reality. The abrupt reintegration of Ranvijay with his estranged family, who readily abandon their livelihoods to support him, is deemed implausible.
At its core, “Animal” explores the complex dynamics within the Singh family, particularly the strained relationship between Balbir and Ranvijay. The film traverses emotional landscapes, portraying themes of love, betrayal, and revenge. However, the disconnect between the narrative and the audience arises from the perceived lack of a coherent message or purpose behind the director’s vision.
In summary, “Animal” stands as a cinematic spectacle, breaking records and achieving unprecedented success at the box office. While it excels in certain cinematic elements, the film’s divergence from a logical storyline and a relatable narrative leaves some viewers questioning the director’s intended message and the authenticity of the characters’ actions and emotions.
Summary
Ranvijay “Vijay” Singh, the son of Delhi-based business magnate Balbir Singh, grew up idolizing his father despite Balbir’s neglect due to a hectic schedule. After an incident involving Vijay defending his sister with an AK-47, Balbir sends him to a U.S. boarding school. Returning after completing his education, Vijay persuades his longtime love Geetanjali to choose him over her engagement.
A family dispute during Balbir’s 60th birthday leads Vijay to break ties, marry Geetanjali, and move to the U.S. Eight years later, Vijay learns of his father’s shooting and returns to India, assembling cousins from his native village to help. Setting up a doppelgänger named Kailash for Balbir, Vijay’s plan goes awry when Kailash is killed by mistake.
Investigating, Vijay discovers Varun’s involvement in the attempt on Balbir’s life and kills him. A subsequent encounter with Asrar Haque’s team leaves Vijay in a coma, later waking up after a heart transplant. He discovers his heart donor was Zoya’s fiancé. Engaging in an affair with Zoya, Vijay learns she was sent by Abrar Haque, Asrar’s brother, to manipulate and replace him.
Abrar’s revenge stems from a property dispute, and the plot unfolds as Vijay confronts his newfound cousins. The story culminates in Vijay killing Abrar, exposing family secrets, and reconciling with his father. In a post-credits scene, Aziz, another of Abrar’s brothers, assumes Vijay’s identity, setting the stage for revenge.
While the film boasts strong elements like acting, cinematography, violence, and rawness, the reviewer criticizes its flawed story logic. The unrealistic portrayal of a son’s unwavering love for an indifferent father and the hero-centric plot, where events unfold without reason, draw criticism. The abrupt reconnection with estranged kin for a mission and the lack of directorial coherence with the film’s intended message are highlighted as weaknesses. Despite these concerns, the movie, titled “Animal,” had a theatrical release in December 2023 after a brief postponement.
