Initially announced in January 2022, Garland’s involvement in the project was revealed, along with the star-studded cast. Additional cast members, including Karl Glusman and Sonoya Mizuno, were announced in subsequent months. Garland described “Civil War” as a thematic companion to his 2022 film “Men,” presenting a sci-fi allegory for the contemporary polarized climate.

Critics have praised the film’s portrayal of violent conflicts and its timely social commentary. Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter lauded its depiction of a nation on the brink of destruction, emphasizing Garland’s poignant critique of American exceptionalism.

The film’s trailer in December 2023 surprised audiences with the inclusion of Nick Offerman and Jesse Plemons, who had not been previously associated with the project. Plemons, in particular, had denied his involvement earlier in the year.
