Code 8: Part II (2024 film)
In Code 8: Part II, a young woman embarks on a quest for justice after her brother is killed by corrupt police officers. Teaming up with an ex-convict and his former partner, they confront a powerful and protected police sergeant determined to thwart their efforts.
Some movies stand alone without needing sequels, and this feels like one of them. Although I barely recall the first movie, this installment seems self-contained, with little tying it to its predecessor except for the returning cast. The Amell brothers return, though Stephen’s vocal strain from years of playing Arrow is noticeable, while Robbie’s performance is passable. However, the storyline feels lacking and dull for much of the film. The visuals, particularly the design of the robotic dog and soldiers, are impressive, but that’s about it. Overall, while Code 8: Part II is watchable, a significant portion of it fails to engage.
Directed by Jeff Chan and co-written with Chris Paré, Sherren Lee, and Jesse LaVercombe, Code 8: Part II is a Canadian science fiction action film released on Netflix on February 28, 2024. Robbie Amell and Stephen Amell reprise their roles as Connor Reed and Garrett Kelton, respectively, alongside Sirena Gulamgaus, Altair Vincent, Alex Mallari Jr., Moe Jeudy-Lamour, Aaron Abrams, and Jean Yoon.
Set five years after the original film, the LCPD has revamped its tech program, replacing deadly humanoid robots with non-lethal K9 companions. Sergeant Kingston oversees this success, boasting safer streets. Meanwhile, Connor, fresh out of prison, works at a community center, striving to leave his past behind. Garrett, now running an ethical drug enterprise, intersects with Pavani and her brother Tarak, residents of a struggling community.
Announced in June 2021, with Robbie Amell and Stephen Amell producing and reprising their roles, filming commenced in Toronto in November 2021. Despite attempts to deepen character dynamics, Code 8: Part II falls short of its predecessor’s balance between action and human connection, according to Marya E. Gates of RogerEbert.com.
Summary
Five years have passed since the incidents depicted in Code 8. The LCPD has revamped its tech program, opting for non-lethal K9 companion robots over their previous armed humanoid units known as Guardians. Under Sergeant Kingston’s leadership, the initiative has proven successful, resulting in safer streets.
Freshly released from prison, Connor now works as a janitor at a youth community center overseen by Mina. He strives to keep a low profile and distance himself from his troubled past.
Meanwhile, Garrett has seized control of Towers, an apartment complex, where he operates an ostensibly “ethical” drug trade, extracting spinal fluid from powered individuals to produce the drug Psyke. Within this impoverished community reside Pavani and her older brother Tarak.
When Tarak steals a bag of money from Garrett’s gang out of desperation, he falls into the clutches of Sgt. King and his corrupt cohorts, who are on the take. To conceal the crime, King orders a K9 unit to track down Tarak, administering Psyke to simulate an overdose. Pav witnesses the murder and, utilizing her rare abilities, causes the robotic K9 to malfunction, allowing her to escape.
Finding sanctuary at the community center, Pav receives aid from Connor and Mina, who help her evade the LCPD’s pursuit. Connor seeks out Garrett to negotiate a truce, which involves erasing Pav’s memory of the murder. However, when Connor realizes the mind-wiping process is erasing all memories of her brother, he resolves to free her from its grip.
The film stands alone in its narrative, not heavily reliant on its predecessor for context, although it features returning cast members, including the Amell brothers. Stephen’s prolonged portrayal of Arrow seems to have taken a toll on his voice, while Robbie’s performance remains intact. Despite the visually striking design of the robotic characters, the plot is deemed lackluster and uninspiring by some viewers. While the film has its moments, a significant portion fails to captivate.
