Assamese, alternatively known as Asamiya, is an Indo-Aryan language predominantly spoken in the northeastern Indian state of Assam. It holds official language status in Assam and serves as a lingua franca in the broader region. Recognized as the easternmost Indo-Iranian language, Assamese boasts over 15 million speakers, as reported by Ethnologue.
In the linguistic landscape, Nefamese, an Assamese-based pidgin in Arunachal Pradesh, formerly served as the lingua franca before being supplanted by Hindi. Nagamese, a Creole language rooted in Assamese, remains widely spoken in Nagaland. The Kamtapuri language in the Rangpur division of Bangladesh and the Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri districts of India shares linguistic affinity with Assamese, although its speakers culturally align with Bengali customs and language. Historically, Assamese served as the court language of the Ahom kingdom since the 17th century.
Belonging to the Eastern Indo-Aryan language group, Assamese evolved before the 7th century CE from the middle Indo-Aryan Magadhi Prakrit. Sister languages include Angika, Bengali, Bishnupriya Manipuri, Chakma, Chittagonian, Hajong, Rajbangsi, Maithili, Rohingya, and Sylheti. It is written in the Assamese alphabet, an abugida system, progressing from left to right and featuring numerous typographic ligatures.
