Monkey Man - Behind the Scenes
Universal Pictures has unveiled a fresh Monkey Man video showcasing Dev Patel’s upcoming directorial debut, featuring the Oscar-nominated actor in the lead role.
The new video delves into the film’s adrenaline-pumping action sequences and intense fights. It includes producer Jordan Peele praising Patel for his dedication to the project. In the movie, an anonymous young man, known as Kid, embarks on a quest to avenge his mother Neela’s death at the hands of corrupt leaders. However, Kid’s journey for vengeance transforms him into a champion for the oppressed and downtrodden, who suffer under the tyranny of these leaders.
“Hey, I’m Dev, here on the set of my directorial debut, Monkey Man,” says Patel. “It’s been an action-packed, crazy ride – blood, sweat, tears, broken bones. Dev Patel proves himself as one of the finest first-time directors I’ve seen. The violence and action are raw, and as a physical performer, it’s mind-blowing because I can’t do that every day. ‘Monkey Man’ resonates with energy, soul, and insane action. Hopefully, you guys will come along for the ride.”
Who's behind Monkey Man?
Directed and produced by Dev Patel, Monkey Man features a screenplay co-written by Patel alongside Paul Angunawela and John Collee. This movie marks Patel’s debut as a feature-length director, following his breakout role in 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire. The film boasts a talented cast including Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte, Sobhita Dhulipala, Ashwini Kalsekar, Makarand Deshpande, Jatin Malik, and Zakir Hussain.
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, symbolizing strength and courage, Monkey Man follows Kid, a young man who barely survives in an underground fight club. Night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he endures brutal beatings from more popular fighters for money. After years of pent-up rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the world of the city’s corrupt elite. As his childhood trauma resurfaces, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash a violent campaign of revenge against those who have taken everything from him.
Dev Patel announced his directorial debut with Monkey Man on October 29, 2018, aiming to give the action genre depth and authenticity. The film completed filming on March 12, 2021, with Netflix acquiring worldwide rights, likening it to “John Wick in Mumbai.” Patel sustained a broken hand during filming.
Monkey Man premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2024, and is set for a United States release by Universal Pictures on April 5, 2024.
