“Omen” (French: Augure) is a compelling drama film from 2023, brought to life by the creative vision of Belgian-Congolese director Baloji. Boasting a stellar cast including Marc Zinga, Lucie Debay, and Eliane Umuhire, the film made its debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard category on May 23, 2023, where it clinched the esteemed New Voice Prize. A collaborative effort spanning Belgium, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Netherlands, France, Germany, and South Africa, “Omen” was chosen as Belgium’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 96th Academy Awards.

In a unique fusion of cinema and fashion, Baloji extended the film’s impact beyond the screen. In 2023/24, the acclaimed director curated the exhibition “Baloji Augurism” at the MOMU fashion museum in Antwerp, Belgium. The exhibit drew inspiration from the traditional African costumes meticulously designed for the film in collaboration with Elke Hoste. The mastermind behind both the screenplay and direction is the multi-talented Belgian-Congolese artist Baloji, known for his contributions to the music scene, including his involvement with Starflam. The production was undertaken by the company Wrong Men, with a budget of 1 million euros. “Omen” received financial backing from various entities, including the VRT, RTBF, Centre du cinéma de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, screen.brussels, the Dutch Audiovisual Fund, and the Federal Tax Service. The filming process spanned 23 days, encompassing 18 diverse locations.

Anticipation for “Omen” is building, with its scheduled release in Belgian theaters on November 15, 2023. Following the domestic premiere, the film will reach audiences worldwide under the title “Omen.” The narrative revolves around a young Congolese man who, after years in Belgium, returns to his birthplace of Kinshasa. The storyline delves into the complexities of his family dynamics and the rich tapestry of his cultural heritage. The Cannes Film Festival 2023 bestowed upon “Omen” the prestigious “New Voice” film prize, securing its place in the Un Certain Regard side competition. Further accolades include recognition at the Filmfest München, where it emerged victorious in the CineRebels competition. The Durban International Film Festival in South Africa awarded it the title of Best African Feature Film. At the Festival du film francophone d’Angoulême, Baloji earned the accolade of Best Director. The 56th Sitges Film Festival also honored the film, with Baloji Tshiani receiving the award for Best Direction.

“Omen” stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and its ability to bridge cultural divides. Through the lens of Baloji’s unique perspective, the film promises to captivate audiences and leave a lasting impression on the global cinematic landscape.
