The Bengal Files (2025 Film)

The Bengal Files is a film that does not just narrate a historical event but also brings to light the bitter truth that took place in the pre-partition period of India. The film is directed by Vivek Agnihotri, who has previously made controversial and factual films like The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files. The Bengal Files is the final installment of his “Files Trilogy”, and this time the focus of the story is on Calcutta in 1946, when a horrific massacre took place during the Direct Action Day.

The film reflects a serious historical period, when religious hatred trampled humanity. Thousands of people lost their lives in this incident on August 16, 1946, and this bloody wave was not limited to Calcutta but also spread to areas like Nawakhali, Tiprah (Comla), Bihar, and Punjab. The story clearly shows the effects of communal violence, human tragedies, and political decisions. Vivek Agnihotri believes that although the events occurred in Bengal, their seeds were sown in Delhi, which is why the film was initially titled The Delhi Files.

The Bengal Files is being released in two parts, the first of which, “Right to Life”, will be released on September 5, 2025. This is the same day when Teachers’ Day is celebrated in India, which gives the message that we need to learn the lessons of history, so that we do not repeat these mistakes.

The story of the film does not seem to revolve around just a tragedy, but also highlights a human aspect. Through various characters, such as Gopal Patha, Mahatma Gandhi, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Sardar, and Ghulam Sarwar Hussaini, the film presents a balanced narrative. Talented actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Sasuta Chatterjee, Dibindu Bhattacharya, and Namashi Chakraborty have played an important role in giving the story of the film a realistic color.

The shooting of the film began in 2023 and was completed by January 2025. The cinematography is handled by Attar Singh Saini, who seems to have succeeded in capturing the atmosphere, fear, and pain of Bengal of that period on camera. The presentation of historical facts with truth and emotional depth give the film a unique identity.

There were some controversies regarding this film initially, especially when it was assumed that the film was based on the 1984 Sikh massacre, but later it became clear that the main theme of The Bengal Files is the Direct Action Day and the riots that followed. After this clarification, the objections to the film also reduced.

The Bengal Files is not just a film but a historical memoir, which forces us to think about what we have learned from history, and if not, what paths we are taking. This film is a window for those who want to know the truth of the past, and also a mirror for those who can feel its echoes in today’s politics and society.

Summary

The story of “The Bengal Files” revolves around India in 1946, specifically Calcutta (now Kolkata) — a time when independence was imminent, but the country was burning in the fire of communal hatred.

The main character of the story is “Arun”, a young lawyer who is ready to die for his principles and truth. Arun’s family is Hindu, but his childhood friend “Salem” is a Muslim, with whom he grew up like brothers. Amidst the growing political tension and religious hatred in Calcutta, their friendship undergoes a severe test.

On August 16, 1946, on the day of “Direct Action Day”, the whole of Calcutta is bathed in blood. At the behest of political leaders, the people become thirsty for each other’s blood. Massacres begin in neighborhoods, markets, even homes. Arun and Salim, both of them, are caught between their respective communities — where they must prove their faith, love, and humanity to save themselves and their loved ones.

The film also features a journalist character, “Radhika Devi,” who witnesses these horrific events with her own eyes and is determined to bring a truth to the world — that the real enemy is not Hindus or Muslims, but the politics that divides the people.

In the story, we also see characters like Gopal Patha who arm the people, and political leaders who remain silent spectators or incite hatred. On one side are journalists, doctors, and activists who speak the truth, on the other hand, there are individuals who wreak indiscriminate destruction by believing violence to be “right.”

The Bengal Files is not just a story of massacre — it is a story of humanity, conscience, and the test of truth. The film ultimately conveys the message that communalism destroys not only cities but also friendships, families, and countries. Freedom was gained, but at a cost.
