The Gentlemen (TV series)

Upon inheriting the family estate, aristocratic Eddie finds himself thrust into a clandestine world he never imagined: his property hosts a sprawling marijuana empire, and its owners aren’t budging an inch.

“The Gentlemen,” a rollicking action comedy series by Guy Ritchie for Netflix, spins off from his 2019 film of the same name. Fronted by Theo James, the show debuted on March 7, 2024.

Eddie Horniman, our protagonist, steps into his father’s shoes only to unearth a lucrative weed operation lorded over by the notorious Bobby Glass. Can this straight-laced her navigate the murky waters of British crime and seize control of the enterprise?—Rosy Cordero If you’re into the wild, eccentric humor of British gangster tales, “The Gentlemen” promises a binge-worthy ride.

As a viewer, I encountered a fresh cast, keeping me guessing. Vinnie Jones’s inclusion, portraying a laid-back yet formidable character, adds depth. The picturesque English estate serves as a charming backdrop in itself. Once again, Guy Ritchie showcases his knack for crafting vivid worlds with dialogue as sharp as a stiletto. Grab a glass of wine and let the adventure unfold.

While it may not surpass classics like “Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels” or “Snatch,” it’s undeniably entertaining. Rotten Tomatoes aggregates a 70% approval rating from 60 critics, stating, “Slick as a well-pressed suit and given watchable wattage by its cast, Guy Ritchie’s ‘The Gentlemen’ doesn’t seamlessly expand upon the original movie but has enough verve to be fun on its own terms.” Metacritic gives it a respectable score of 67 out of 100, indicating “generally favorable reviews.”

Theo James stars as Edward “Eddie” Horniman, the newly minted 10th Duke of Halstead and a former United Nations peacekeeping officer. Kaya Scodelario portrays Susan “Susie” Glass, who steers Bobby Glass’ criminal syndicate in his absence.

Summary Plot

Edward Horniman finds himself unexpectedly thrust into a grand inheritance of 15,000 acres and the prestigious title of Duke of Halstead upon the reading of his late father’s will. However, this newfound status comes with a twist: the title carries a special provision allowing it to pass to the second son. As he grapples with this revelation, he discovers that his ancestral land has been transformed into a sprawling empire of cannabis cultivation, overseen by the formidable Susie Glass. Now, Eddie must navigate a treacherous landscape filled with a diverse array of dangerous characters, each with their own clandestine agendas, all while endeavoring to safeguard his heritage and his own life.

In this series, we follow Eddie Horniman as he contends with the unexpected inheritance of his father’s vast estate, only to uncover its entanglement with a lucrative marijuana enterprise controlled by the infamous Bobby Glass. Does this straightforward soldier possess the fortitude to navigate the murky depths of the British criminal underworld and seize command of the entire operation?

Joining Theo James, Kaya Scodelario, and Ray Winstone in the ensemble cast are Daniel Ings (“I Hate Suzie”), Joely Richardson (“Lady Chatterley’s Lover”), Vinnie Jones (“Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”), Giancarlo Esposito (“Better Call Saul”), Chanel Cresswell (“This is England”), Michael Vu, Max Beesley (“Hijack”), Jasmine Blackborow (“Marie Antoinette”), Harry Goodwins (“In His Hands: The Emergence”), Dar Salim (“The Covenant”), Pearce Quigley (“Detectorists”), Ruby Sear, and Peter Serafinowicz (“The Tick”).
