The Lord of the Rings

“The Rings of Power: A Middle-earth Tale” is an upcoming TV series set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth universe. Amazon Studios is producing this prequel to “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, exploring new storylines preceding “The Fellowship of the Ring.” The show will delve into the Second Age of Middle-earth, spanning over 3,000 years. This epoch encompasses crucial events like the creation of the Rings of Power, Sauron’s ascent, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Noteworthy for its substantial production budget, substantial use of practical effects, and the involvement of the Tolkien estate, the series is generating considerable buzz. “The Rings of Power” is an American fantasy series developed by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay for Amazon Prime Video. Based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” and its appendices, the series unfolds millennia before “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” detailing key events of Middle-earth’s Second Age. Amazon Studios, in collaboration with New Line Cinema and under the guidance of the Tolkien Estate, is responsible for its production.

Amazon secured the TV rights from the Tolkien Estate in November 2017, committing to a five-season production valued at a minimum of US$1 billion. This investment positions it as the most expensive television series ever. Payne and McKay joined the project in July 2018, with a focus on the appendices detailing the Second Age. Simon Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien’s grandson, played a consultative role in the development. Although not a direct continuation of Peter Jackson’s film trilogies, the series aims to capture the essence of the films through similar production design, younger portrayals of characters, and a musical theme by Howard Shore, who composed for both trilogies. Bear McCreary crafted the series’ score.

Featuring a diverse international cast, the first season’s eight-episode filming spanned from February 2020 to August 2021 in New Zealand, where the films were shot. Production for subsequent seasons moved to the United Kingdom, with filming for the second season occurring from October 2022 to June 2023, concluding amid the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Premiering on September 1, 2022, “The Rings of Power” debuted with its initial two episodes. The remainder of the first season ran until October 14, becoming the most-watched Prime Video original series, as per Amazon. It received generally favorable reviews from critics. The second season is slated for a 2024 release.

Set millennia before “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” the series draws from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth history. Commencing in an era of relative tranquility, it chronicles major Second Age events: the crafting of the Rings of Power, Sauron’s rise, Númenor’s downfall, and the alliance between Elves and Men. While Tolkien’s original stories span thousands of years, the series condenses these events for dramatic effect. “The Rings of Power” premiered on Prime Video in the U.S. on September 1, 2022, with episodes simultaneously released in over 240 countries and territories.

Episodes Summary

Taking place millennia prior to the events depicted in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, this grand narrative unfolds against the backdrop of Middle-earth’s history. Delving into a period characterized by relative tranquility, the series spans the significant occurrences of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the creation of the Rings of Power, the ascension of the malevolent Dark Lord Sauron, the downfall of the island realm of Númenor, and the ultimate alliance forged between Elves and Men. While Tolkien originally spread these events across millennia, the series condenses them for a more streamlined storytelling experience.

This expansive saga unfolds countless years preceding the narrative of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, transporting audiences to an epoch marked by the forging of formidable powers, the ascent and decline of kingdoms, trials of unlikely heroes, precarious threads of hope, and the looming threat of the most formidable villain penned by Tolkien. Commencing in a period marked by relative calm, the series traces the journeys of a diverse cast, blending both familiar and novel characters, as they confront the resurgence of evil in Middle-earth. From the profound depths of the Misty Mountains to the enchanting forests of Lindon, the elf-capital, to the awe-inspiring island realm of Númenor, and to the farthest corners of the map, these realms and characters will etch legacies enduring long beyond their passing. —Amazon Studios

Initial promotions for the series on social platforms featured various maps of Middle-earth’s Second Era and excerpts from The Lord of the Rings novel. Illustrator John Howe crafted these maps, supervised by Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey to ensure fidelity to Tolkien’s works. Despite meticulous efforts, two errors drew complaints from fans after the maps were online.

In January 2022, Amazon deemed the full title reveal critical for launching the series’ marketing campaign in its premiere year. Instead of relying solely on visual effects, a video announcement showcased the title’s letters cast from molten metal, accompanied by a voiceover of the “Ring Verse” from The Lord of the Rings. Directed by Klaus Obermeyer and featuring special effects supervised by Lee Nelson, the video, shot in late 2021, experimented with various metals and elements like sparkler dust and liquid hydrogen. The final metal mix of bronze and aluminum, poured into reusable sand molds, was filmed at 5,000 frames per second for ultra-slow motion. The forged letters, inscribed with Elvish writing, adorned a redwood piece for the title card. Amazon invited representatives from TheOneRing.net and entertainment journalists to witness the shoot.

In June 2022, a book detailing Middle-earth’s Second Age events, named The Fall of Númenor, was announced. Compiled by Tolkien scholar Brian Sibley from J.R.R. and Christopher Tolkien’s writings, the book capitalized on renewed interest in Tolkien’s works following The Rings of Power’s first season release in November 2022. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premiered on Prime Video in the United States on September 1, 2022, with simultaneous global releases in over 240 countries and territories.
