The Thundermans Return (2024 film)

“The Thundermans Return” is a 2024 American superhero comedy film helmed by director Trevor Kirschner and penned by Jed Spingarn, Sean W. Cunningham, and Marc Dworkin. Serving as a sequel to the beloved comedy TV series “The Thundermans” (2013–18), created by Spingarn, the movie features the ensemble cast including Kira Kosarin, Jack Griffo, Addison Riecke, Diego Velazquez, Maya Le Clark, Chris Tallman, and Rosa Blasi reprising their roles as the Thunderman family, along with other returning characters. Production commenced in early April 2023 in Los Angeles, with filming concluding on April 28, 2023. The film hit screens on March 7, 2024, debuting on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon.

Following the series finale by three years, the Thundermans find themselves back in action when meteors strike Metroburg. However, their return to superhero duties takes a detour when an unexpected mishap leads to their dismissal from the T-Force, relegating them to their hometown of Hiddenville. While Hank and Barb relish the return to their roots, and Billy and Nora anticipate a typical high school life, Max and Phoebe are determined to reclaim their superhero status.

The storyline of the film traces the family’s journey as they embark on a new chapter of superhero crimefighting. Despite the excitement of their super-powered lifestyle, a single misstep sends them back home. While the parents revel in the familiarity of Hiddenville and the younger siblings prepare for normalcy, Max and Phoebe are resolute in their quest to regain their former superhero glory.

While the reunion of the cast is a nostalgic delight, the film falls short of fully capturing the essence and vigor of the original series. The plot, though straightforward, lacks the depth and complexity desired by fans. Despite its shortcomings, the film imparts a message of belonging, underscoring the importance of home. However, for some viewers, like myself, who constantly feel adrift, this sentiment rings hollow. Overall, while “The Thundermans Return” is an enjoyable reunion, it leaves room for improvement.
