Us (2019 Film)

Jordan Peele’s 2019 American psychological horror film, “Us,” takes audiences on a chilling journey into the complexities of identity, duality, and societal implications. Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker, the film delves into the unnerving encounter of Adelaide Wilson (Nyong’o) and her family with their menacing doppelgängers, known as ‘the Tethered.’ The film, announced in February 2018, saw the collaboration of Peele, Jason Blum, and Sean McKittrick, the trio behind the critically acclaimed “Get Out” and “BlacKkKlansman.” Filming spanned from July to October 2018 in California, with locations including Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Santa Cruz.

“Us” premiered at South by Southwest on March 8, 2019, and hit theaters nationwide on March 22, 2019, receiving both critical acclaim and commercial success. Grossing $256 million globally against a $20 million budget, the film was lauded for Peele’s screenplay and direction, Nyong’o’s standout performance, and Michael Abels’s haunting musical score. The narrative unfolds in 1986, as young Adelaide Thomas encounters her doppelgänger in a funhouse, a traumatic incident leading to her silence and withdrawal from her family. Fast forward 33 years, and adult Adelaide, now reluctantly on vacation with her family, faces a nightmarish ordeal when their own sinister doubles, the Tethered, emerge to terrorize them.

As the Wilsons confront their doppelgängers — Pluto, Umbrae, Abraham, and Red — the film explores the Tethered’s origins. Red, the only one capable of speech, reveals they are clones created by the government for an experiment gone awry. Abandoned underground, they mimicked their counterparts’ actions for generations. The Wilsons, realizing the widespread chaos caused by the Tethered, decide to escape, driving along the coast to Mexico. Along the way, they face traps and attacks, leading to a final confrontation in an underground facility filled with white rabbits. Adelaide discovers her true identity as the Tethered, with Red being the original Adelaide who swapped places with her years ago.

Peele skillfully weaves a complex narrative, exploring themes of identity, class, and the consequences of societal neglect. The film’s cinematography and concept are hailed as fantastic, with Nyong’o’s performance earning widespread acclaim. The eerie, ambiguous atmosphere and Peele’s direction add layers of depth to the narrative, making “Us” a thought-provoking horror experience. Despite its strengths, some critics note script inconsistencies and editing weaknesses, particularly in transitions between past and present scenes. However, the film’s uniqueness, bizarre nature, and the unexpected twist at the end contribute to its lasting impact.

In a nuanced review, one viewer expresses conflicting feelings, acknowledging the film’s cinematographic brilliance, strong acting, and impactful score. While recognizing some script shortcomings and sound editing issues, the viewer anticipates a more profound appreciation upon a second viewing, emphasizing Peele’s prowess in the horror genre. In conclusion, “Us” stands as a testament to Jordan Peele’s storytelling prowess and his ability to push the boundaries of conventional horror. The film’s intricate narrative, layered themes, and unforgettable twist make it a standout in contemporary horror cinema, ensuring it will be discussed and dissected for years to come. Whether you view it as a masterpiece or acknowledge its imperfections, “Us” leaves an indelible mark on the horror genre.

In June 2004, 20th Century Fox secured the film rights for “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.” The project gained momentum in April 2007 when Chris Columbus was appointed as the director. Filming commenced in April 2009 in Vancouver, with Mammoth Studios in Burnaby serving as the primary studio. Notably, scenes at the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee, provided an authentic backdrop, featuring a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens. The captivating Lotus Casino sequence unfolded at The Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, while Percy, Grover, and Annabeth’s journey was captured on the iconic Las Vegas Strip and in front of the Fremont Street Experience.

The film’s diverse locations, including Mission, British Columbia, and Brooklyn, New York, contributed to its visual richness. Filming concluded in July 2009, with additional work carried out during the first week of August in New York. Digital intermediate processes commenced in San Francisco in November 2009, accompanied by a compelling score by Christophe Beck. Chris Columbus emphasized the meticulous casting, envisioning sequels and desiring the characters to evolve with their respective actors.

However, not all aspects of the adaptation pleased author Rick Riordan. During production, he expressed disappointment over alterations to the storyline and cautioned the studio about potential alienation of the book series’ loyal readers. Riordan specifically critiqued changes such as aging characters and introducing profanity, predicting a negative impact on audience engagement. Furthermore, he questioned the inclusion of Persephone’s pearls, deeming them unrelated to mythology and distracting from Percy’s primary quest to recover the stolen lightning.
