I am a big fan of horror movies but I had never thought that I had wanted to act in one because I don’t think that actors get to do much in them. They’re usually just reacting.
Early and Personal Life
Julia Stiles was born in New York City to parents Judith Newcomb Stiles, a Greenwich Village artist, and John O’Hara, a businessman. She is the oldest of three children; her siblings are John Junior and Jane (also an actress). Julia Stiles is of English, Irish, and Italian descent. She started acting at age 11, performing with New York’s La MaMa Theatre Company.
Julia (O’Hara) Stiles, born on March 28, 1981, in New York City, is the outgoing daughter and eldest of three children of a Greenwich Village artist mother, Judith Newcomb Stiles, and an elementary school teacher father, John O’Hara. Encouraged to take modern dance lessons, she was introduced to Shakespeare and theater at an early age. When she was 11, she made her stage debut as a child actress with the experimental off-Broadway La MaMa Theatre. Her passion grew, and by the next year, she was performing professionally and working in commercials. A bright, precocious student, she was seriously considered for the child vampire role of Claudia in Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) but lost out in the end to Kirsten Dunst. She continued training at New York’s Professional Children’s School and, at 15, made her cinematic bow with I Love You, I Love You Not (1996) with Claire Danes. Julia Stiles graduated from Columbia University with a degree in English literature in 2005. In college, she dated actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and the two lived in John Jay Hall. She and actor David Harbour were in a relationship between 2011 and 2015. In 2010, she received a John Jay Award, an honorary award given annually to five alumni by the Columbia College Alumni Association for professional achievements.
Julia Stiles has also worked for Habitat for Humanity, building housing in Costa Rica, and has worked with Amnesty International to raise awareness of the harsh conditions of immigration detention of unaccompanied juveniles. She says she gave up veganism after she developed anemia and found it difficult to get proper nutrition while traveling. She has described herself as a feminist and wrote about the subject in The Guardian. She is a fan of baseball and the New York Mets. She threw the ceremonial first pitch before their May 29, 2006 game. In September 2017, Stiles married camera assistant Preston J. Cook, with whom she worked on Blackway. They have two sons and one child born in late 2023.
I think audiences, producers and directors included, develop crushes on actors (actresses in particular) and then lose interest and move on to the next one. […] There are a handful of actors who sustain interest because it’s exciting to watch them get better at what they do. I want to be one of those actors.
Career
Julia Stiles embarked on her cinematic journey with her debut role in “I Love You, I Love You Not” (1996), alongside Claire Danes and Jude Law. Subsequently, she portrayed small yet impactful roles, including Harrison Ford’s character’s daughter in Alan J. Pakula’s “The Devil’s Own” (1997) and in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Wide Awake” (1998). Her breakthrough came with her lead role in “Wicked” (1998), where she portrayed a troubled teenage girl entangled in a sinister plot involving her mother. Critic Joe Baltake hailed her as “the darling of the 1998 Sundance Film Festival.” Transitioning to television, Julia Stiles captivated audiences with her compelling performance in the hard-hitting mini-movie “Before Women Had Wings” (1997), produced by Oprah Winfrey, addressing issues of child abuse. Her desire to explore Shakespearean roles was fulfilled through diverse adaptations, including “10 Things I Hate About You” (1999), earning her the Chicago Film Critics Award, and contemporary reimaginings of “Hamlet” (2000) and “Othello” (2001). Despite delays due to real-life tragedies, such as the Columbine High School shootings, Julia Stiles versatility and talent shone through in each portrayal.
Additionally, Julia showcased her theatrical prowess by portraying Viola in an off-Broadway production of “Twelfth Night” in 2002, and later revisited her stage roots in David Mamet’s “Oleanna” in London, reprising the role on Broadway in 2009. Transitioning to mainstream cinema, she left an indelible mark with her portrayal of Nicky Parsons in the Bourne franchise alongside Matt Damon. Amidst her cinematic ventures, she returned to the stage and explored indie films, demonstrating her versatility across various mediums.
In 2010, Julia ventured into series television, captivating audiences as Lumen Pierce in “Dexter,” earning her critical acclaim and award nominations. Subsequently, she ventured into lead roles in TV dramas like “Blue” and “Riviera” in 2012 and 2017, respectively.
Married to Preston Cook and a mother of one, Julia continued to grace the screen with notable roles in films like “The Great Gilly Hopkins” (2015), “Jason Bourne” (2016), and “Hustlers” (2019). I was gonna throw the first pitch at a Mets game, but there was a rain delay. So I’m waiting for it to stop, and the team’s manager, Willie Randolph, comes by. Now he’s already intimidating to begin with. But he comes over to me and says, ‘If you screw this up, they will boo you.’ And I said ‘Thanks.’
